The Code Enforcement Division holds a vital role in maintaining community standards and enhancing the quality of life within a city. Tasked with enforcing local ordinances, this division ensures that residents and businesses comply with regulations related to property maintenance and other city codes.
The objective of Code Enforcement Officials is to achieve voluntary compliance in our neighborhoods through education, outreach, cooperation, community involvement and enforcement. By identifying and inspecting unsafe, unsanitary as well as nuisance property conditions, this Division maintains, improves, and safeguards the quality of life in our city.

Common Questions and Complaints

Grass Height/Tree Limbs
Property owners in the City of Nicholasville are required to prevent excessive growth of weeds and grass on their property. Per city ordinance, grass is to be maintained as to not exceed 8 inches. All weeds including but not limited to thistle, poison ivy, bush honeysuckle and polk are to be cut and removed from the property. Tree limbs are to be trimmed away from sidewalks and streets as to not cause hazards for pedestrians and vehicles.

Garbage
The City of Nicholasville requires all property owners to obtain and keep garbage services for residential and businesses in city limits. Residential property owners are required to use the garbage service the City/County has on contract

Chickens
Yes, you can have chickens in the City of Nicholasville! They must be contained and not cause a nuisance or create a noise disturbance.

Junk/Debris
Junk and debris shall include but is not limited to: discarded furniture, household items, tires, car parts, paint, scrap metal, discarded building materials, and any other items not intended for outdoor use or storage. Such items must be removed from the property and disposed of properly.

Vehicles
All vehicles in the City of Nicholasville must be road worthy and licensed per KRS 186.020. Vehicles with flat tires, expired registrations, or have been disassembled on city streets will be tagged and removed from roadways after 72 hours. Vehicles that cause a traffic hazard and/or block the flow of traffic will be towed immediately.

Enforcement
It is the property owner's responsibility to maintain compliance with all City of Nicholasville ordinances. All confirmed complaints will be issued a notice of violation. If the violation is not corrected in the time frame allowed, possible citations/fines could occur against the property. Continued non-compliance may result in the City of Nicholasville abating the property. If the fines and/or abatement fees are not paid, liens may be placed against the property.
