THE HIRING PROCESS

1. APPLY & TEST

APPLICATION
Submit a completed employment application during an open hiring period. 


BASIC SKILLS & READING EXAM
Math, grammar, and reading assessment. 


PHYSICAL FITNESS & AGILITY
1 repetition max bench press, 18 sit-ups, 20 push-ups, 300-meter run in 65 seconds, 1.5 mile run in 17:12 minutes or less

2. SCREENING & EVALUATION

PERSONAL HISTORY QUESTIONNAIRE & SUITABILITY SCREENER
Complete the required personal history and suitability screening.

 

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION
A background investigation and investigator interview are conducted.

 

POLYGRAPH EXAMINATION
Complete a polygraph examination as part of the hiring process.

 

ORAL BOARD INTERVIEW
Interview with the Chief of Police and a panel of command officers and city officials.

 

MEDICAL EVALUATION & DRUG SCREEN
Complete the required medical evaluation and drug screening.

3. POLICE ACADEMY

20 WEEK DOCJT ACADEMY
Complete the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT) academy, consisting of 2 weeks online and 18 weeks in person in Richmond, Kentucky. 

4. FIELD TRAINING & PROBATION

16 WEEK FIELD TRAINING PROGRAM
Complete NPD's 16-week Field Training program followed by completion of probationary training.

POLICE ACADEMY TRAINING

20 WEEK DOCJT ACADEMY
New officers attend the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT) academy. The program consists of two weeks of online training followed by 18 weeks of in-person training in Richmond, Kentucky.

FIELD TRAINING

16 WEEK FIELD TRAINING PROGRAM
Following academy graduation, new officers complete NPD's 16-week Field Training program. This provides supervised, hands-on experience as officers transition from academy training to working independently
